Dong-Jin Kim is one of the most beloved art song composers by the Korean public due to his embracing of the Korean spirit in his music. Twentieth century Korean history is filled with struggle; Japanese oppression, the Korean War, and radical modernization influenced by the West. In the midst of this, Western music was introduced to Korea by missionaries. As a ministers son, Dong-Jin Kim was naturally exposed to Western music. He had a great passion for creating true Korean music; not a mere imitation of Western music, but music that expresses the spirit of the Korean people. First, this brought his attention to pansori (Korean traditional vocal and percussion music performed by Korean minstrels). It took many years for him to notate the music of pansori into Western style notation. When he blended pansori into Western style art song and operas, he named this new style Shin-Chang-Ak (new singing music), and asked singers to study the proper way of vocalizing in these pieces. Secondly, Dong-Jin Kim composed a set of art songs based on the poems of So-Wol Kim (1902 ~ 1934). These poems are best known for their great value of expressing Koreas national emotion, sorrow of the nation being a colony of Japan. This lecture recital will offer samples of his art songs which represent the distinctive value of his music interweaving the Korean spirit with the blend of traditional Korean and Western musical languages.
